“This looks awful,” I groaned, staring at my reflection in the mirror. Where was the body I had ten months ago?

That body was great. I loved flaunting that body.

My stomach still had a bump, which just made me look like I was a bloated whale rather than adorably pregnant. My boobs had deflated. Thanks to my attempt at breastfeeding, the right one was smaller than the left.

I had stopped hitting the gym like I used to and my thighs showed it. Everything was softer. Lumpier. Paler. Gone was the luscious pregnancy hair. Handfuls fell out every time I got in the shower.

“You look great,” Layla said from her perch on my bed. She was overseeing Kat’s tummy time while I attempted to get dressed for my first date with Shane.

Which, given the current state of affairs, I was beginning to dread.

“I don’t,” I said with a huff as I pulled off the clingy wrap dress I used to love. It joined the growing pile of rejected wardrobe options on the floor.

“What did he say y’all are doing?” Layla asked.

“I have no clue,” I grumbled as I went back to square one and pawed through my closet.

It was like returning to the fridge every five minutes to see if the contents magically changed.

“And I’m still wearing a diaper. I should not be going on any kind of romantic excursion while I’m bleeding out. Like seriously—I’ve been bleeding for weeks. How am I not dead yet?”

Layla laughed. “You downgraded to a pad. That’s progress.”

“A maxi pad,” I clarified. “For a super flow. With the wings.”

“Still not a diaper,” Layla countered.

“Feels like one.”

Maybe separates would work better… It was warm out. I could do shorts.

Granted, the only shorts I had that still fit had the stretchy spandex top for pregnancy.

I couldn’t wear maternity shorts on a date.

Dates were for being impressive and sexy.

“Are you sure you don’t need a babysitter?” Layla asked as she picked Kat up and cradled her. “You know Cal and I don’t mind.”

I shook my head, recalling Shane’s instructions.

I’ll pick you up at noon. Wear something comfortable you can walk in. Bring Kat, but don’t worry about the diaper bag.

That last part didn’t make any sense. I had the diaper bag packed and ready just in case.

“Shane said to bring Kat.” I eyed the belly binder that had been given to me. The tags were still on it.

I could probably make the dress work…

I slapped the wrap around my stomach and cinched it tight. My trusty spanx were next. I needed to smooth everything out. I swapped the soft nursing bra I still hadn’t stopped wearing for one with padding and lift, then dropped the dress over my head and did a little turn in the mirror.

I felt like a stuffed sausage. It was a little hard to breathe, but at least I wasn’t so self-conscious about how much my body had changed so quickly.

“He’s really going all-out,” she said with a grin. “I knew it was only a matter of time.
